Requirements Overview

North Carolina requires operators born on or after January 1, 1988 to carry a boating safety education certificate when operating a motorized vessel.

You must carry your physical card on board whenever you are the operator of a motorized vessel on North Carolina waterways. A photocopy is generally not accepted. If you completed a course recently and are waiting for your physical card, carry your printed temporary certificate — it is accepted during the processing period.

How to Get a North Carolina Boater Education Card

Complete any NASBLA-approved boater safety course. Online courses are the most convenient option and issue a printable temporary certificate the same day you pass the exam.

Out-of-State Cards in North Carolina

North Carolina accepts NASBLA-approved boater education cards from other U.S. states for out-of-state visitors. If your home state issued a NASBLA-approved card, it satisfies North Carolina's requirement for visitors. North Carolina residents who completed a course in another state should verify their card's acceptance with NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
